Seasonal Cycles :: Deepen into Winter

Seasonal Cycles :: Deepen into Winter

At this time of year, water turns to ice and plants store their energy in their roots. Winter is considered a time of reflection, deep receptivity, and a time of building potency. The season of winter asks us to slow down and store up.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine this season is related to the water element and Kidney energy. Kidney energy can become depleted with stress, over stimulation, and overwork. And so during this time of year it’s especially important to rest and rejuvenate and nourish new seeds of potential. This is also a wonderful time of year to focus on internal practices like meditation and contemplation.

Meals in Bowls : 4 Quick and Easy Recipes

Meals in Bowls : 4 Quick and Easy Recipes

The struggle to find healthy ideas for meals is a big one. In fact, it's one of the most common questions I get in my private practice. The thing is, eating healthy and on the go, can be easy. Oftentimes, it just means simplifying. For years I've been making meals of combining basic ingredients in a single bowl. I've seen this called many things, and some of my favorite restaurants even have their favorite twist on this tried and true technique. Recently, I even saw a book on this very topic. The book "Whole Bowls" from yummybeet author Allison Day provides plenty of inspiration!

Wellness Wednesday :: How to Heal and Strengthen your Digestion

Wellness Wednesday :: How to Heal and Strengthen your Digestion

This past weekend here in Canada it was Thanksgiving. I was actually in Colorado on the weekend celebrating a friends wedding which was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on all that I am grateful for!

I love celebrating by taking the time to give thanks and enjoy the abundant harvest of early fall. There are so many things I love about this time of year - here in my cabin in the woods I've been enjoying stoking the wood fire stove first thing in the morning as I sit down to write, the particular color of light as it plays against the changing leaves, and the warmth of making delicious meals from a new yummy cookbook I recently found (look out for recipes coming soon!).

Everything you ever wanted to know about juicing

Everything you ever wanted to know about juicing

I LOVE juicing. To be clear - I'm not talking about conventional store bought fruit juice which is often full of processed sugar, colors, and preservatives. I'm talking about homemade rich green veggie juice. Veggie juicing enlivens you, and your cells, and gives you an instant shot of nourishing energy and nutrition.

In Defence of Food :: Book Review

In Defence of Food :: Book Review

Thinking about food and nutrition seems to be such a concern for many of us. There are endless questions and just as many answers floating around related to health and nutrition. Our ancestors didn't give any thought to measuring and calculating vitamins and nutrients and yet they were on average healthier and many of them lived longer than us. Even though we are obsessed with the biochemistry of food and how it affects the body, as a whole, we are some of the most unhealthy humans to have ever lived. So what happened? and how can we find a more balanced and healthy understanding of nutrition? Michale Pollan outlines the emergence of what he calls "nutritionism" in his book "In Defence of Food". He claims this "nutritionism" ispartially to blame for the lack of understanding regarding food we encounter today.
