The terms yin and yang come from Taoism and have been adopted by yoga practitioners to describe types of movement. The name “yin yoga” is simply a term used to describe a practice that activates “yin” type tissues of the body through “yin” type movement.

During yin yoga, postures are held for longer periods of time (usually between 3-5 minutes) in a passive and receptive way. The practice targets the deeper structures and tissues which are considered the more yin parts of our anatomy. Most postures are done on the floor and focus on the lower half of the body. The yin yoga practice is more cooling and quiet, so I suggest practicing in a warm room and using blankets and bolsters for support.

Mindful Yin Yoga Free Video

Mindful yin yoga requires practitioners to stay in a posture, much like a seated meditation. Because of this, it’s a perfect container to develop a mindfulness and inquiry practice. Once you’ve attended to the physical shape of the pose, ensuring any injuries or limitations have been accounted for, bring your awareness to the internal practices of meditation and contemplation.

Find a quiet space for this very calming 1 hr 12min. practice.
